A Coconut Creek man is facing felony charges after allegedly threatening to burn his family’s cars and go on a killing spree.
According to a Coconut Creek Police Department report, officers were dispatched to an emergency call just before midnight on April 15 in response to a disturbance involving a man later identified as Jonathan Diaz, 21, of Coconut Creek.
The incident report shows that the victim, his mother, told officers that her son had returned to her apartment and forcibly removed a surveillance camera that was mounted next to her front door. Earlier that day, Diaz had been formally evicted from the residence by the Broward Sheriff’s Office.
Upon reviewing the video footage, the report shows that officers observed Diaz arrive at the home and linger outside the apartment for nearly 30 minutes. During that time, he repeatedly activated the camera and launched into a tirade of insults directed at his mother. More alarmingly, Diaz made several threats, including statements about “filming a movie,” of himself setting her vehicles on fire, and going “on a killing spree” once police arrived.
The arrest report details how officers reviewed footage that shows Diaz ripping the surveillance camera from the wall, which abruptly ended the filming at that point. Deputies searched the area but were unable to locate Diaz or recover the stolen camera.
On April 16, Diaz was taken into custody and transported to the Broward County Main Jail, where he was released on a $7,500 bond and electronic monitoring.
