Working out in a packed gym can be dull, grueling – even solitary. It can leave some reluctant to return, and upset over wasted membership fees. If that’s your story, take heart. A new kind of workout has come to Coral Springs.
Revolve Fitness offers clients a blend of TRX training and RealRyder indoor cycling. Different from the average stationary bicycle, the fleet of RealRyder ABF8 bikes at Revolve Fitness turn, lean, and steer, giving clients the sensation of a real outdoor bike ride.
Created by Colin Irving, the RealRyder bike achieves more than an aerobic workout; it also works the upper body in ways that strengthen core muscle groups.
The RealRyder ABF8 has two pivot points, one behind the seat post and one below the front of the frame and designed so riders can actually turn the handlebars as they lean and tilt along to music videos playing in Revolve’s workout room.
RealRyder bikes will have you rethinking how cycling should actually be,” said Revolve Fitness owner, Tarah Timothee who co-owns the business with her partner, Scott Sloane, a retired fire captain at Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, and a current nurse practitioner.
“I recommend new clients take at least three classes to get used to the RealRyder. She described how fun it is to blast music, and dim the lights while clients spin their pedals, clocking as many revolutions per minute.
For the uninitiated, TRX suspension training was invented by Randy Hetrick, a former U.S. Navy SEAL who during his deployment,, sought a way to stay in top shape without the use of a gym. What began with using parachute webbing to leverage his body weight and build strength, balance, and flexibility, turned into TRX suspension training.
Both Sloane and Timothee have shed weight and body fat since adopting steady routines on their specialized bikes and TRX equipment. They said they look at their small group classes as a way to meet new people, test physical limits, and have fun doing it.
“We love the community aspect of this business. I enjoy getting to know all of our members, find out what they specifically want to work on, and help them reach their goals,” said Timothee.
Timothee hints “revolutions” on the 17 bikes in her center have something to do with the naming of their company. A former District Manager in Miami, she brought sleek and cheerful decor to Revolve. A couch and cozy sitting area welcome people who walk in. Before classes begin, they are free to browse stylish workout clothes and shoes with brand names like Onzie, Lululemon, Koral and Tiem – labels that are prominent in the fitness community.
Timothee said a grand opening event is planned for some time in early summer, but she and her partner aren’t anxious about it.
“We’re so different from the big name gyms in the city, we feel like we aren’t in competition with them,” Sloane said. “Our fitness plan is all about offering people a great workout that can be modified to their ability level. If you need to sit out a while, feel free. There’s no intimidation, no judgment. We hope there’s a sense of accomplishment, satisfaction and fun .”
While Sloane chatted about Revolve’s mission statement, clients arrive for their full-body morning workout. A woman named Kelly enters with a bouquet of pink orchids for her instructor and comments how amazing everything looks. Lissette, Judy and Jennifer constitute the other members who signed up for a 45 minute workout.
Everyone checks in by tapping an iPad, not far from a flickering aromatic candle.
Registration is handled online via the scheduling app MINDBODY . Individual fitness classes can be booked for $20, and are a welcome option for those who want to try a few classes before purchasing annual or monthly packages. Trial classes are offered at competitive rates and an intro TRX class is free.
“Give us an hour and we’ll give you a killer total body workout: thirty minutes on the REALRYDER followed by 30 minutes of strength training,” said Timothee, adding clients get cardiovascular and strength training in equal doses.
She recommends arriving 15 minutes ahead of class, and bringing plenty of water. To register for a class, or book a free TRX trial session, visit revolvecoralsprings.com.
