BSO Detectives Probe String of Circuit Breaker Thefts in Parkland

Investigators are working to solve a string of circuit beaker thefts from construction sites and homes in Parkland—part of a national crime trend targeting the coveted devices, authorities said.

On June 28, an unknown person entered 7 homes at The Falls at Parkland Villas under construction on South Blue Spring Drive, each with their garage doors open, according to the Broward Sheriff’s Office. The culprit stole a total of 140 circuit breakers from breaker boxes, worth an estimated $6,300, deputies said.

On July 6, unknown suspects stole 24 electric breakers worth about $1,100 from a breaker box at a construction site at Four Seasons on Bastille Cir East, deputies said.

The next day, unknown suspects swiped another 24 electric breakers worth the same amount from a breaker box at a construction site on Fortress Run, according to BSO.

It is not clear whether the same person or persons are responsible for the thefts.

Circuit breakers can resell for hundreds or even thousands of dollars, depending on the type.

Thefts of the devices have been reported across the U.S., with some thieves exclusively targeting them at homes, construction sites, and businesses.

Detectives with the Broward Sheriff’s Office Parkland District are investigating thefts and are working to curb the local trend by pursuing the thieves and educating builders.

“The crimes have occurred in open and unlocked homes under construction,” said Gerdy St. Louis, BSO Public Information Officer. “Investigators have discussed the thefts with surrounding law enforcement agencies and are working with builders on recommended ways to secure their properties.”
