Marjory Stoneman Douglas wrestler Gaby Caro makes history after finishing in first place in the inaugural Florida High School Athletic Association girls sanctioned Regional Wrestling Championship.

Held on Saturday at Wellington High School, Caro is automatically qualified to compete in the States after recording two pins, winning 9-3 in the final.

A sophomore, Caro typically competes against boys. She pinned three wrestlers in the Broward County Athletic Association Tournament after finishing eighth.

Earlier this year, Caro had her best performance at the Coral Springs Wrestling Tournament, placing second while the Eagles won the event.

“Gaby’s biggest success is she is just so humble and so coachable,” said Head Coach Ken Gendason. “I believe what she has gone through competing against boys all season in varsity events is going to mentally and physically prepare her for her.”

Next, Caro will compete in States on March 3 at Silver Spurs Arena in Kissimmee.
