Marjory Stoneman Douglas Girl’s and Boy’s Soccer Teams Complete Incredible Season

It was an exciting season for both the girl’s and boy’s soccer teams at Marjory Stoneman Douglas. The girls extended their season to regionals while the boy’s team fell in the District Tournament.

Girls Team

It was an excellent run for the MSD Girl’s Soccer team as they won districts for the 22nd time in school history and advanced to Regionals before their 1-0 loss on Tuesday night.

The Eagles had a couple of chances throughout the game but were held scoreless and allowed a goal in the final 20 minutes of the game to Spanish River High School.

“Although I am disappointed in tonight’s results, I am so proud of how hard the girls worked throughout the season and the improvement they showed from the start until now,” said Head Coach Laura Rountree.

The Eagles started the season 0-1-1 after a loss to J.P. Taravella and tied to Western High School. They then went on to split their next six games before their season-long five-game winning streak and eight-game unbeaten streak.

In their two District playoff games, the Eagles outscored their opponents 10-1 for their second straight season with a District Title.

Offensively, senior Krystina Masihy led the team with 14 goals. They had 16 different players score a goal this year and saw terrific goaltending from Carly Brodsky.

With many seniors on the team, the Eagles will hope to rebuild quickly with some of their younger players as well as some players from the JV team this year for a third straight District Championship.

Boy’s Team

The Marjory Stoneman Douglas boy’s soccer team was arguably the best in the District during the regular season but fell early in the District Tournament.

The Eagles, who went through a four-game winning streak to improve their record to 6-3-2, fell in their last two games disappointingly.

Cooper City High School beat them 7-2 in the final regular-season game of the season, and then the Parkland school fell to Coral Glades in the District tournament despite beating them 5-2 in the regular season.

However, Coral Glades went on a historic run in Districts and ended up winning the title over Monarch High School despite a tough regular season.

The Eagles were led offensively by senior Daniel Robotella. Coming into the game against Pompano Beach High School, on January 13, he had only two goals, but managed to score four in the next two games to lead the team.

In net, Alex Duque finished his high school career strong, as the Eagles will lose nine seniors to graduation and will have many new spots open for some of the younger players in a quest to get back to winning District Championships.
