In a District Championship rematch, the North Broward Prep girls basketball team defeated Somerset Academy to advance to the Regional Final.
It is only the second time in school history the Eagles have reached the Regional Final and also picked up their 22nd win of the season and third win against Somerset this year.
“It’s very difficult to beat a team (Somerset Academy Canyons) three times in one season, but it takes discipline, confidence, and trust to get it done,” said Head Coach Gardner Michel. “Cardinal Gibbons will be a great opponent for our team to overcome in the Regional Final to make it to Lakeland for the State Finals.”
The game was tight early before NBP broke out to a 19-10 lead. Somerset responded to tie the game up, and shortly after, the two teams went into halftime, tied at 28. The Eagles, though, came out of the break on a 12-0 run in less than three minutes, capped off by a three-pointer from Riley Weiss.
The Senior finished the game with 25 points. Alexa Schwartz and Kaydie Sturm combined for 22, while Meadow Henningsen, Samantha Edelson and Ana Abaelleira also combined for nine.
“During the third quarter we focused on taking care of the basketball and getting defensive stops,” Michel. added. “Our ball movement and spacing helped us build a lead going into the fourth quarter.”
Next, NBP will play for the Regional Championship against top-seeded Cardinal Gibbons High School. The Chiefs are 21-5 this year and won a District Championship. They beat Coral Springs Charter and Monsignor Pace so far in Regionals and had a one-point win against NBP earlier this year.
In the head coaching debut for Josh Blumenthal, the North Broward Prep boys lacrosse team recorded a 10-6 win over Olympic Heights High School on Monday.
“The first win is always a truly special one, and the season-opener was nothing short of that,” said head Coach Josh Blumenthal. “The team has been putting the work in and it showed in their resilience and determination to fight back and secure the come-from-behind victory.”
Jacob Tannenbaum scored six goals for the Eagles, while Chandler Ripps had two. Chase Rosentrauch and Nolan Corcoran also scored goals to help NBP moves to help them move to 1-0 after winning only two games all of last season.
The rest of the NBP consists of Jacob Gilbert, Spencer Jones, Nicholas Avares, George Quatela, Zachary Cohen, Matthew Routman, Evan Buchninder, Gage Knight, Daniel Katz, Alec Dubin, Max Brownhill, Taylor Lemieux, Connor Black, Isaac Alexy, Landon Krasner, Brandon Moldof, Hunter Clouse, Luke Bons, Dylan Berman, Jeremy Panster, Jack Rubinstein, Ryder Schwartz, Jackson Forano, and Chandler Ripps.
