North Broward Preparatory School’s theater troupe, which includes five Parkland students, is headed to the Super Bowl for high school thespians.
Earlier this week, the students learned that their production of Catch Me If You Can was selected to perform on the main stage at the 2022 International Thespian Festival. North Broward Prep is one of only seven schools in the nation to be selected and the only school in Florida.
“This is a tremendous honor, the big leagues for sure,” said Brian Edgecomb, theater teacher, and thespian sponsor. “The students have had such a trying time with quarantines and Covid. They haven’t been able to do live theater in so long. To be able to take this national stage is just out of this world.”
Parkland students and their grade levels are Abigail Adler, 11th, Dakotah Berk, 10th, Olivia Espinoza, 10th, Adam Fournel, 11th, and Sophia Mobley, 11th.
The festival is June 20 – 24 at Indiana University. This is the first time it will be live in three years due to the pandemic.
North Broward Prep’s theater troupe comprises 60 cast and crew members in grades 9 – 12. It will cost each student about $1,200 to attend the festival. Edgecomb said they are in the early stages of planning fundraisers to get that price lowered.
“We’ll have scholarships for some students, but we will also be doing fundraisers to help with the cost,” he said.
Founded in 1957, the Pre-K -12 school offers a STEM curriculum, fine arts, international baccalaureate, advanced placement, honors, and other innovative programs. Accredited by the Florida Council of Independent Schools and the Florida Kindergarten Council, North Broward Prep has 1,550 students representing 25 countries.
North Broward Prep, located in Coconut Creek, serves students from Coral Springs, Parkland, and Broward and Palm Beach Counties.
