Parkland Library Holds Classes and Events for All-Ages 2

During construction of the new wing, the Parkland Library remains open and is holding many upcoming classes for all-ages.

The new addition, set to open by the end of the year, will house a dedicated library for children as well as include new space for classes and events.

Peaceful Pieces Jigsaw Puzzle Meet-up (adults)

Tuesday, January 29, 10:30 a.m.

Exploring Resilience Using The Five Gifts and SoulCollage (adults & teens)

Tuesday, January 29, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

In these unstable times, who among us is not searching for a sense of inner safety and calm? This inspirational workshop will offer ways to support yourself and others with grace, compassion and strength. As author of “The Five Gifts: Discovering Hope, Healing, and Strength When Disaster Strikes” Dr. Laurie Nadel knows what it is like to have her life turned upside down. She lost her home to Hurricane Sandy and was directly impacted by the World Trade Center attacks of September 11th, 2001. In her search for reliable ways to release the painful emotions brought about by these difficult experiences, Dr. Laurie discovered SoulCollage, a creative hands-on process that bypasses the rational mind and let us tap into our own creativity and intuition. TED Talk Video Screening & Discussion: “Why Theater is Essential to Democracy”

Wednesday, January 30, 6 p.m.

Truth comes from the collision of different ideas, and theater plays an essential role in showing us that truth, says legendary artistic director Oskar Eustis. In this powerful talk, Eustis outlines his plan to reach (and listen to) people in places across the US where the theater, like many other institutions, has turned its back.

“Our job is to try to hold up a vision to America that shows not only who all of us are individually, but that welds us back into the commonality that we need to be,” Eustis said. “That’s what the theater is supposed to do.”

Smart Start Tutoring

Adult Lantern Craft

Tuesday, February 5, 10:30 a.m.

Create a colorful stained glass lantern using recycled glass jars! We’ll use tissue paper, sequins and more for this project that will add a beautiful glow to any room. Black History Month Movie Night: Marshall (adults & teens)

Wednesday, February 6, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

In honor of Black History Month, the Parkland Library will be screening Marshall, based on the incredible true story of future Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall and one of the landmark cases of his life.

It follows the young lawyer (Chadwick Boseman) to conservative Connecticut to defend a black chauffeur (Sterling K. Brown) charged with sexual assault and attempted murder of his white socialite employer (Kate Hudson). Muzzled by a segregationist court, Marshall partners with a courageous young Jewish lawyer (Josh Gad) and together they mount the defense in an environment of racism and anti-Semitism.
