For the 24th time in school history, the Marjory Stoneman Douglas girls soccer team was crowned District Champions Monday Night.
The Eagles defeated Coral Glades 1-0 after beating J.P Taravella in the semifinals. Layla Segelnick recorded the lone goal in overtime as an assist from Skylar Lund after neither team scored in regulation. Goaltenders Carly Brodsky and Ella Stevens pitched a shutout in net for the Eagles.
“It means a lot to win a district championship,” said Head Coach Laura Rountree. “Coral Glades played fantastically and made it very difficult to score, and we feel very fortunate to have won.”
MSD’s historic season will continue in Regionals as they await to see their opponent. The Eagles reached the state semifinals last year and have a record of 12-1-3 this year. Coral Glades will wait to see if they will qualify for Regionals based on rankings after the schedule comes out later this week.
