A woman told police she was robbed and sexually assaulted on the grounds of the Fern Forest Nature Center in Coconut Creek Thursday, police said.
A person of interest has been identified in the case, but no arrests have been made as of Friday afternoon, said Coconut Creek Police Public Safety Information Officer Scotty Leamon.
City police officers responded to the 247-acre urban wilderness area at 201 Lyons Road South at 1:44 p.m. Thursday to investigate the report by the 53-year-old female victim, Leamon said.
The woman told officers she was walking alone on one of the nature trails when a man robbed and sexually assaulted her. Leamon said she was not physically injured, and her attacker was gone when officers arrived.
Detectives are following up on several leads developed in the investigation, and Leamon said Friday that a person of interest had been identified in the case.
The investigation was ongoing Friday afternoon.
The forest preserve features several boardwalks and several miles of nature trails.
