The Coconut Creek Police Department and the Coconut Creek Firefighters Benevolent Association will join forces for a good cause on Thursday, February 9, by hosting a “Tip-a-Hero” fundraiser to raise money for the United States Police Canine Association (USPCA).

The event, taking place at Bar Louie in the Promenade at Coconut Creek, 4443 Lyons Road, will be an evening filled with entertainment, including a K9 demonstration, a DJ, and items for sale.

The Coconut Creek K-9 Unit and other officers and firefighters will act as “celebrity servers” for the night, with a portion of every tab being donated to the USPCA. This 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization supports advocacy and training for police canines and their handlers.

Money raised will help the USPCA put on the competition and conduct weekly classes so handlers can complete the hours necessary for national certification.

Scotty Leamon, the spokesperson for the Coconut Creek Police Department, praised the USPCA for its work in promoting best practices and communication within the police canine community.

“You have an advocacy organization that’s out there finding best practices and tasked with communicating those best practices not only to its members but also to their departments, and that’s something that’s really helpful and hopefully preventing any type of incidents to where training may come into question,” said Leamon.

Tip-A-Hero is held from 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. at Bar Louie in the Promenade at Coconut Creek, located at 4443 Lyons Road. For sponsorship information, contact bdelvecchio@coconutcreek.net.
