Marjory Stoneman Douglas Eagles Receive 4 Major Baseball Awards

The accolades continue for the Marjory Stoneman Douglas baseball team. After winning their second straight State Championship, the Eagles had their head coach and three other players pick up major awards.

Coach Todd Fitz-Gerald

After his third state championship, Todd Fitz-Gerald was named Coach of the Year. The Eagles went 30-2 this year and won the High School Baseball Invitational featuring the top 16 teams in the country. They also won the District, Regional, and State Championships to finish the season as the number one ranked team.

Roman Anthony

Roman Anthony was named Florida’s Gatorade Player of the Year earlier this month and now can add Broward County Player of the Year to his resume. Anthony was the team’s lead-off hitter and starting center fielder. He hit .545 with ten home runs and 40 RBIs. He also stole 19 bases and scored 68 runs. He will be playing next year at Ole Miss.

Chris Arroyo

While Chris Arroyo shined on both the mound and at the plate, he was awarded Broward County’s Pitcher of the Year. In 52.1 innings, Arroyo had an ERA of .54 with a record of 10-1. He also had three saves and struck out 84 batters, along with earning the win in the State Championship Game. He is set to play at the University of Florida.

Jake Clemente

Jake Clemente was also named Broward County Pitcher of the Year. The hard-throwing right-hander went 10-0 this season with an ERA of 1.10. Clemente threw a complete game in the State Semifinals and also struck out 81 hitters in 57.1 innings. Clemente will join Arroyo at the University of Florida.

Cameron Harris and Santiago Ordonez also made the First team All Conference for MSD. Harris had .418 batting average with 27 RBIs in addition to his 26 runs. He is set to play next year at Wingate while Ordonez, who is committed to Florida State University, hit a home run and had 19 RBI’s.

Christian Rodriguez, Rolando Lujo made Second Team All Conference while Niko Benestad, Grant McDonald and Brandon White were honorable mentions.
