Students at Coconut Creek High School participating in the Mentorship Program now have a dedicated room for meetings and mentoring sessions with successful women from the community.

The room, located above the school’s gymnasium, was dedicated on June 5, just before the end of the school year.

Dr. Nicole Nearor, Coconut Creek’s principal, Mayor Sandra Welch, Commissioner John Brodie, and Coconut Creek Women’s Club members participated.

According to Emily Maher, chair of the Women’s Club, the room was made available to the students after they met in random classrooms and did not have a dedicated space.

The members were part of the school’s cheerleading team and were looking to partner with mentors. The Women’s Club members participated in renovating the room by painting, cleaning, and patching holes. The club members promised to help even more next year.

“Nobody knew this room was there, and we were going to make it a special place,” said Maher.

Maher, a Coconut Creek resident and owner of Maher Insurance Group,  provided financial support. “Next year, we will reach out to businesses and ask for donations.”

In the coming year, the Women’s Club is dedicated to improving the mentorship program and exposing members to various opportunities they can pursue. Maher aims to motivate them to visit local businesses and organizations where they can meet successful women. Additionally, the club will arrange for visits from female leaders to share their experiences with the students.

“We will have full mentorships and show them a higher bar. Some students don’t know what they want to do after high school, and we want to answer their questions,” said Maher.
