On March 21, the Coconut Creek Police recognized a group of outstanding students and a teacher for making a positive difference with its Do the Right Thing award.
Hannah Namuli and Jaylah Nunez, fourth graders at Tradewinds Elementary School, were nominated by Laura Sudman, a school resource officer.
They noticed a fifth grader leaving through the wrong door for an appointment and told an assistant principal. While the student had a reason to leave the school, the school administration was impressed that the girls reported a situation they did not feel was right.

Pietro Costa, a fourth grader at Tradewinds Elementary School, was nominated for saying, “No.” He noticed people playing a game of Red-Light Green Light when a boy who wanted to join the game became aggressive. Costa prevented the situation from getting out of hand by telling the boy to stop his actions.

Miladys Puddie nominated Thanh, a senior at Atlantic Technical College and Technical High School, for her outstanding computer programming and community service work. She helped the school by working on a program to automate the meeting scheduling. She has also worked to enhance an app that tracks school buses so people can know how far it is from a stop. Thanh is active in the computer programming club and the music club.

Janiriha Thomas and Ka’Tourha Lane, seniors at Coconut Creek High School, were nominated by their Principal, Dr. Nicole Nearer. They both reported that their friend’s mother did not want to live anymore. Officer Edwin Almanzar conducted a welfare check on the woman. While the matter is confidential, it was reported that the woman received positive attention.

Officer Wally Grieve nominated Laura Taliaferro, a Coconut Creek Elementary School guidance counselor. Taliaferro was nominated for being compassionate and putting her heart and soul into her work. According to Scotty Leamon, the Coconut Creek Police Department’s public information officer, she cares about the safety and well-being of her students.
