Marjory Stoneman Douglas kicker Kelly Ferber has been the talk of the varsity football team this season.
The only female on the team, Ferber made her debut in the first home game against Cooper City High School and recorded her first career extra point against South Plantation High School on October 22, becoming the first female in MSD history ever to record a point.
The Parkland native then added her second point against Coral Springs High School, helping the Eagles win their fifth game of the season.
“Playing on the team has been the greatest experience I have had thus far,” Ferber said. “We are all one big family, and I have made many fond memories and friendships.”
Ferber had always been an excellent soccer player and remembered a time in elementary school when she watched a high school female kicker. She decided to start her own journey and began kicking in tenth grade before making varsity as a senior.
Kicking has been another goal she has set out to achieve and worked towards for two seasons.
Drawing the attention of her teammates and Head Coach Quentin Short who said Ferber is one of the hardest-working players on the team.
“She comes every day and works on her craft,” Coach Short said. “She works hard in the weight room and at practice. She pushes people to do their best and has been a great addition to our team.”
With the support of her friends, coaches, and family, the message she writes on her wrist tape every game is “to be the best you can be.”
Ferber has certainly done that and credits Vanderbilt’s Sarah Fuller for the courage she showed in becoming the first female ever to score in a Power-Five college football game in 2020.

“To all the young girls who might be interested in playing football, I would like to say that you can do it,” she said. “As long as you work hard, are dedicated and consistent, you will succeed. Just never forget to be yourself and be the best that you can be.”
While she has only one regular-season game left this year before graduating, Ferber hopes to remain on the field, whether kicking or being a coach. She is also planning to attend a state school in Florida with a pre-veterinary program.
