North Broward Prep’s successful winter season continued this week, highlighted by the girls soccer team winning a District Championship and a record-setting performance from the lone senior on the girls basketball team.

The girls soccer team had a historic season, going 13-1-2 in the regular season. NBP earned the top seed in the playoffs and received a bye in the opening round before beating Jensen Beach High School 8-0 in the Semifinals. Jayda Palumbo recorded a hat trick, while Eduarda Kroschinsky and Sumayah Brown had two. They combined for five assists, with Lila Brown also finding the back of the net. Laila Dionisio, Ivory Edgecomb, and Ella Munoz also had assists.

The Eagles then went on to win 2-0 in the final, with Brown scoring in the first half before Anabelle Straiti found the back of the net in the second half off a corner kick.

“I am incredibly proud of our girls’ for clinching the District Championship,” Head Coach Tricia Amrhein said. “The credit goes to the players for stepping onto the field and giving it their all for the full 80 minutes against a very talented Somerset Canyons team.

After a successful run last year, NBP will head into the Regional Championship as the top seed and will play Mater Lakes Academy in the opening round on Tuesday, February 6, at 7 p.m. The Bears went 9-4-2 in the regular season and beat Westland Hialeah in their District Final.

The boys soccer team was stunned in the District Semifinals after going 11-2-2 during the regular season. The Eagles lost 2-0 again to Jensen Beach High School but will likely have a chance to continue their season in Regionals as the 34th-ranked team in Florida.

The girls basketball team earned a 54-49 win to begin the week with a victory over Berean Christian High School to complete the season sweep. Alexa Schwartz scored 21 points, while Ysamar Pimental had 20.

The Eagles then held Senior Night on Tuesday and honored Ana Abelleira before their win over St. John Paul II Academy. The Eagles won 58-17, with Abelleira scoring 15 points and setting a school record with 23 rebounds.

“It felt really good to see everyone excited and ready to play, and I was happy to have my coaches and teammates encourage me to break the rebound record,” Abelleira said.

Head Coach Tommy Kohlwaies says she has meant too much to the team.

“Her leadership, work ethic, and overall attitude has been a pleasure to see and hear,” Kohlwaies said. “Ana has grown tremendously as a player and is a huge reason we will end up with a winning record.”

Schwartz, Longo, and Pimental were all in double figures to help NBP move to 12-8. They will play their final regular season game against Park Vista Community High School on Friday, February 2, at 7 p.m. before the start of the District Tournament. The Eagles are seeded second and will play Pompano Beach High School, with the winner facing either Coral Springs Charter or Glades Central. Somerset Academy Canyons are the top seed and will play either American Heritage High School or Calvary Christian Academy in the semifinals.

The boys basketball team began the week with a loss against Westminster Academy but closed the regular season with a win against Ferguson High School 84-58. They are heading into the District Tournament as the two seed and will pokey Dreyfoos School of the Arts in the opening round. The winner of this game will play American Heritage or Somerset Academy, while Calvary Christian Academy, Coral Springs Charter, Glades Central, and Pompano Beach High School are all on the other side of the bracket.

The hockey team is 19-0-1 in state and 19-3-2 overall. They are set to play in the League Semifinals as the top seed on Monday, February 5, against the lowest remaining seed.
