Rep. Christine Hunschofsky: September Legislative Updates

State Rep. Christine Hunschofsky

From State Rep Christine Hunschofsky:

While growing up in Boston, for us, Labor Day was the unofficial end to the summer. Not only was it a chance to celebrate the hard work and accomplishments of our labor force, but also their contributions to help make our country strong. Additionally, for some, it was the last 3-day weekend to take a quick vacation or take advantage of retail sales before we went back to school. In Florida, school has already started and some of us may have taken advantage of the sales tax holiday, so this 3-day weekend may give us a chance to relax and recharge.

For our family, September is the time we start planning for the fall and winter holidays. The stressors of everyday life and planning for the upcoming holidays can add to the difficulties that some people are already experiencing. September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month and a good time to talk to our family members and friends about suicide prevention. If you or someone you know is in crisis, please call the new Suicide and Crisis Lifeline at 988. If you know someone who is struggling with their mental health, call 211 in Broward. Also, in Northwest Broward, we have wonderful organizations such as Eagle’s Haven Wellness Center (eagleshaven.org) and Tomorrow’s Rainbow (tomorrowsrainbow.org) that are there to help.

Personally, for me, one of the most important opportunities we have as citizens is the right to vote. September 28, 2022, is National Voter Registration Day and a great time to register to vote and to check your voter registration status and vote by mail requests. Visit our Broward Supervisor of Elections website at BrowardVotes.gov to find all the information about registering and voting.

On the legislative front, in 2021 I sponsored the bill to establish a Commission on Mental Health and Substance Abuse. I am grateful to Speaker Sprowls for appointing me to the 19-member Commission. We have now been meeting for a year and are working on submitting draft recommendations to the Governor, Senate President, and Speaker of the House. Our goal is to recommend how we can improve the delivery of mental health and substance abuse services in the State of Florida. I am in awe of the talent and experience we have on the Commission. If you are interested in the work we are doing, please visit https://myflfamilies.com/service-programs/samh/commission or reach out to our office.

All our residents should be mindful that September is budget season for local and county governments who will be approving their budgets and final tax rates. To learn more about your city and county budgets in District 96, visit their websites at
