State Rep. Christine Hunschofsky: Back After the Busy Legislative Session

State Rep. Christine Hunschofsky

From State Rep Christine Hunschofsky:

It is great to be back in the district after our busy and extended Legislative Session.

While we had some incredibly controversial bills make their way through the process, there were also some good bills dealing with school safety, mental health, the workforce, insurance, early learning, veterans, military spouses, and climate change that did make it through the process. Areas where there was little or modest movement included affordable housing, predatory rent increases, and comprehensive property insurance reform. While I and others filed amendments to address these issues, they were not taken up or accepted.

I will be giving legislative updates throughout the upcoming months regarding bills that were signed by the Governor and appropriations that survived the veto. We will be sending out information in our email newsletter and posting on social media. Please reach out to us to subscribe or for more information.

Earth Day is Friday, April 22. The legacy of this day reminds us of the many laws that have been passed to protect our climate and environment. In Florida, we are especially impacted by environmental issues such as rising sea levels, flooding, water issues, or more frequent and intense storms.

The Florida Legislature did more work tackling several of these issues this past legislative session through laws that would mitigate the impacts of sea-level rise while investing in Everglades restoration and establishing a Chief Resilience Officer to give this area the attention it needs. In our own homes, we can also make a difference by reducing our water and electricity usage, making use of reusable containers and bottles, composting, and recycling effectively, thereby lowering contamination.

On Tuesday, April 5, our office, in partnership with the City of Parkland, is hosting a Florida Licensing on Wheels (FLOW) event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Parkland Amphitheater. This is an opportunity to get your first-time license, renew or replace your license or ID card, renew your vehicle registration, and get a new or renewed disabled parking placard.

Pre-registration is required. Please contact Brianna Schofield in our office at 954-956-5600 or Brianna.schofield@myfloridahouse.gov to make an appointment.

I personally want to wish a Happy Easter, a Happy Passover – Chag Sameach, and Ramadan Mubarak to all who celebrate. We are blessed to live in an area with diverse religions, and this month is a special one with several holy days. It is also a wonderful opportunity to learn more about our own and other religions and traditions from our families, friends, and neighbors.

Thank you to all who have reached out to me with concerns, comments, questions, and support. To learn more about our work, please subscribe to our weekly newsletter by emailing HDIST096@myfloridahouse.gov with “subscribe” in the subject line.
