The City of Coconut Creek is all set to host the 9th Annual Mayors’ Chess Challenge. This event brings together chess enthusiasts of all ages and skill levels to promote scholastic chess in the community.

Mayor Joshua Rydell said that chess was one of the best things he learned as a child and that it has been an honor to participate in the challenge since he was elected.

He added that chess can help students academically and socially. “It teaches various skills, including visualization, critical thinking, problem-solving, and sportsmanship.”

Both of his daughters have learned and played, and although he considers himself an intermediate player, each year, he has been humbled by the youth, “who are clearly experts.”

Scheduled for Saturday, March 2, 2024, at the Recreation Complex located at 4455 Sol Press Boulevard, the event offers an opportunity for players of all ages and skill levels, including novices and experts, to participate in fun and friendly chess matches. The event is free to attend, and no pre-registration is required.

Created by Sunrise Mayor Mike Ryan in 2014 as a way to highlight the benefits of chess in an academic environment, each month during the school year, it rotates to different Broward County cities.

In addition to community members, the event will also see elected officials and community leaders come together for a friendly game of chess. The event is part of the city’s efforts to promote scholastic chess and provide opportunities for residents to engage in fun and educational activities.

The City of Coconut Creek encourages everyone to attend and invites interested individuals to call 954-956-1580 or visit www.CoconutCreek.net/Parks for more information about the event.
