Monarch and Coconut Creek Face-Off in Exciting Week of Sports

It was another fun week of sports in Coconut Creek, with local teams facing off along with the start of the track and field season.

In volleyball, the Knights took on the Cougars on March 4, with Monarch recording a four-set win after going 9-3 last year. They also beat Highland Christian High School but lost to St. Thomas Aquinas High School and Coral Springs High School, while Coconut Creek is 0-4 and has won just three sets.

In flag football, Monarch faced off against Coconut Creek on Thursday and picked up a 6-0 win to move to 4-4 on the season. They previously had wins at  Coral Glades,  Plantation High School, and Hollywood Hills High School, while the Cougars are now 1-7. They also beat Hollywood Hills High School for their only victory.

The Monarch baseball team went 0-3 in Tier 1 of the BCAA Championship and split their two games this week. They beat McArthur High School 11-9 but fell against Cooper City 5-3, while the softball team is 6-3 this year with wins over Coral Springs High School. Piper, Fort Lauderdale,  Northeast, Deerfield Beach, and Plantation High School outscored their opponents 132-3 in those games. The Knights lost to South Plantation High School Marjory Stoneman Douglas this year, Cardinal Gibbons High School, and St. Thomas Aquinas High School. The Coconut Creek baseball team played only one game this year and lost 19-3 against Boyd H. Anderson High School.

Track and field season is also underway, with Monarch racing at South Plantation High School in their first meet, with the boys team finishing in sixth place with 64 points. Josh Doerfler led the team with a first-place finish in the shot put and also came in third in the shot put. Smaari Reed also finished in second in the 200 meters, with Clayton Cannon, Mark Harris, Robert Woods, and Reed coming in third in the 4 x 100 relay. Jaidhen Beaubrun came in fourth in the 400 hurdles, and Dominic Savio also finished fifth in the triple jump.

The girls team finished in third place, with Katrice Burke winning the 200 meters and Kennedy Stephenson, Katrice Burke, Saniah Whyte, and Courtney Johnson taking first in the 4 x 100 relay. The Knights also finished second in the x 4 x 400 relay, along with second-pace fishies from Johnson and Sabella Chalssant. Sasha Rodriguez finished third in the 400 hurdles, with Riley Cockreham finishing in the top five twice.

Coconut Creek competed at Coral Springs High School, with Godson Sinelien winning the discus for the boys and Stephaine Bien-amie taking first for the girls in the 100 hurdles. Tyler Joseph came in second in the  400 meters, with Ethan Bonheur and Paul Inonme also doing well.

North Broward Prep has competed in two meets, highlighted by a win in the St. Andrews Open. Caleb Makovsky, Danylo Babinchuk, Boston Nguyen, Christopher Baker, Alex Pavon, and Eric Kontos, and the 4 x 100 relay of Nguyen, Braxton Bylow, Felix Ostamendy, and Baker all finished first for the boys. Kaiden O’Neill finished first twice, along with Nina Sanguino, Saleyah Turner, and Alexa Schwartz for the girls.

North Broward also held senior night for its tennis teams. The boys team honored John Hammer, Jacob Hartman, Arnov Kohli, and Mikulas Soukoup. The girls team honored Alexis Ash and has won three matches this year. The beach volleyball team,  though, is winless in its first two matches.
