A man has been charged with abusing the 911 emergency system following his confession to concocting a false report of road rage, an act he hoped would provoke a police response that would lead to officers fatally shooting him.
On January 15, the Coconut Creek Police Department arrested a man, later identified as Calix Green, 41, of Hollywood, after he was found to have been at the center of a chaotic few moments in which officers believed there to be a road rage incident involving an exchange of gunfire.
According to the report, at approximately 9:45 p.m., Calix had called 911 to report a road rage incident involving gunfire between two Dodge Chargers – one orange and one yellow – on the 3600 block of West Sample Road.
Green, pretending to be a concerned bystander, provided live updates while allegedly following the vehicles, even claiming to hear gunfire and see a weapon.
Responding to the call, Coral Springs Police issued a ‘Be On the Lookout’ (BOLO) alert to nearby agencies. A coordinated effort led to a traffic stop of a black and yellow 2019 Dodge Charger, driven by Green, in the 8300 block of West Sample Road.
Upon contact, Green was detained for further investigation, and the truth was revealed – the cellphone used to make the 911 call was registered to Green.
During questioning, Green confessed to fabricating the entire story in hopes the officers would fatally shoot him.
This false report led to an extensive law enforcement response. Ten officers and three sergeants from both Coconut Creek and Coral Springs Police Departments were deployed to the scene.
Green was arrested by CCPD officers and transported to the Broward County Main Jail.
Upon his arrival, records show he was required to undergo mental health evaluations.
