Holmberg Road from Pine Island Blvd. west to the Coral Springs-Parkland border is due for construction upgrades to improve roadway access and pedestrian safety.
The Broward County Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) and the City of Parkland are sponsoring the Holmberg Road Mobility Improvement Project, set to begin May 26.
Project improvements include widening the roadway at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School for a right-turn lane, milling and resurfacing, and installing bike lanes.
Other components of the project include upgrading sidewalks, curb ramps, pedestrian signals, pavement markings, and signage, according to a press release.
Even though there are safety components in the project, Director of Communications Todd DeAngelis said that the city primarily views the Holmberg Road project as an improvement project.
Costing $609,551, the Holmberg Road improvement project is part of a $300 million initiative that the Broward County MPO is investing in roadway upgrades and safety.
DeAngelis stated that since both the Broward MPO and the Florida Department of Transportation are in charge of the project, the cost is not coming from the city’s budget.
One direction of Holmberg Road will be closed during paving operations during the project’s duration.
Any traffic will be rerouted to Pine Island Road, Trails End, and Nob Hill Road.
These detours will not occur during weekdays when school is in session, and there will be access at all times to both Westglades Middle School and Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.
For pedestrians, detours are possible from Monday through Friday between 4 p.m and 7 a.m.
Ahead of the project’s commencement, the Florida Department of Transportation will hold a workshop both virtually and in-person to discuss the project and answer any questions.
The virtual session will take place between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m.
The in-person session takes place between 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. at the Parkland Library, located at 6620 N. University Drive.
The improvement project will continue through late 2022.
