A man from Coconut Creek was taken into custody and faced charges of assault with a deadly weapon and false imprisonment.
On December 10, the Coconut Creek Police Department responded to a domestic violence incident with serious injuries located near the 1200 block of Southeast 4th Avenue in Deerfield Beach.
According to the report, officers were greeted by both the victim and a man, later identified as Julio Antonio Gomes, 51, of Coconut Creek.
Officers on the scene separated Gomes and met with the victim, who had obvious signs of trauma, including pronounced bruises on her arms.
According to the victim, she and Gomes, her husband from whom she has been separated but recently been dating again, had attended a party together before returning to Gomes’s residence in the Country Lakes Mobile Home Park. The victim claimed Gomes was extremely intoxicated and confronted her about a man he saw on her phone.
The situation escalated when Gomes grabbed her, threw her on the bed, and broke her cell phone. Gomes then brandished a large butcher knife, held it over his head, and pointed toward the victim before threatening to kill himself if he “couldn’t have her.”
The victim said she pleaded for her safety, fearing for her life as Gomes continually raised the knife. To diffuse the situation, she convinced Gomes to lower the weapon.
The victim said she spent the night in uneasy silence, trying to leave but waking Gomes up every time she tried to leave. For hours, the victim lay awake and made attempts to flee but was met with Gomes reawakened and unpredictable.
In the morning, Gomes agreed to drive the victim home. On the way there, she called and had her son contact the police to intercept Gomes when he arrived.
At the Coconut Creek Police Department, Gomes admitted to holding down the victim, causing the bruises, and acknowledged pointing the knife at himself during the confrontation.
Gomes was arrested and transported to the Broward County Main Jail. He was later released after posting a $13,500 bond.
