The United States Police Canine Association [USPCA] Region 1 Field Trials are underway in The City of Coconut Creek. More than 100 police K-9 teams from Florida, Georgia, and Alabama compete.
“People think the dogs are just here to bite people, and that’s just not right,” said Scotty Leamon, spokesman for the Coconut Creek Police Department. “This is a pretty prestigious event. It’s a regional event, and it will bring in the best of the best.”
The USPCA is the leading police canine certification in the industry, emphasizing obedience, agility, and attention to detail in training. Each event will test the dog’s ability, communication with its handler, and overall skill.
The free events will take place at Monarch High and Sable Pines and Tradewinds Parks. The judges will examine how well and fast the dog obeys its handler.
Wednesday at Monarch High School was the apprehension portion of the competition. Thursday, if you are near the track of Monarch High School, you may hear blank gunshots. The competition starts at 8 am and will run until early afternoon.
The public is invited to the Super Bowl of all K-9 shows Thursday at 6 pm at Coral Glades High School Stadium, 2700 Sportsplex Drive in Coral Springs. Awards for the week will be given out, and demonstrations will be performed.
