“Today is a day of healing. A day of mourning,” said Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel in a press conference in the aftermath of one of this country’s worst school shootings in Parkland.
Israel said that all victims families have been notified, and a list will be released soon with names.
The suspect will be appearing before the first magistrate before 2 p.m. at the Broward County Courthouse.
“We will interview every single student and every person in that school that possibly knew something or might not know they know something,” said Israel. “We want to make sure we are able to prosecute this case.”
The suspect has been charged with 17 counts of premeditated murder and Israel said that law enforcement will do everything they can to make sure that he is convicted of all charges and justice is served.
There have been copycat threats made today to other schools and police will respond in full to every threat and they will investigate it.
Broward County Public Schools Superintendent Robert Runcie said that it’s going to take quite a while to deal with this. But now is the time for the country to have sensible gun control and real funding for mental health support for our youth.
“We should not have disconnected youth wandering around within our communities and we know they need additional support. I’ve been on the phone with members of our legislature they’re going to to work with the leaders and our governor to substantially increase the amounts being put on the table right now for mental health services in our schools,” said Runcie.
Attorney General Pam Bondi who assisted in the aftermath of Pulse Nightclub shooting said her job now will be to continue to help the victims and their families to make sure that they can pay for their funeral expenses.
“If you are in the hospital with your loved ones, we will be coming to you to make sure we help with your hospital bills. You have nothing to worry about there.
She said for those that wish to help, donate to the official GoFundMe page
She said they will also be on the scene with the FBI. “People who we don’t think were impacted, were impacted. We’re going to provide counseling for all of them.”
