A new dessert destination is preparing to open its doors in Coconut Creek, bringing more than a century of cold treat tradition with it.
Abbott’s Frozen Custard is targeting a June 1 opening at 6562 North State Road 7, according to franchise owner Ian Osorio, who spoke with Coconut Creek Talk about the highly anticipated debut.
The shop will mark Osorio’s first location with the historic brand, and he felt Coconut Creek was the perfect place to introduce its signature frozen custard to the South Florida market.
“We wanted a vibrant, welcoming area that appreciates quality and tradition,” Osorio told Coconut Creek Talk. “Coconut Creek is the ‘Butterfly Capital of the World,’ and that sense of community and family-centric growth made it the perfect choice for our first Abbott’s location.”
Osorio said the team is currently “putting the finishing touches on the space to ensure everything is perfect for our first guests,” and that plans are still on track for a June opening.
Unlike traditional ice cream, frozen custard offers a richer, creamier texture, which is something Osorio is eager for the community to experience.
“The biggest difference is the texture and the process,” he said. “Frozen custard is made with a hint of egg yolk and is churned much more slowly than traditional ice cream. This prevents excess air from entering the mix, resulting in a much denser, smoother, and creamier product.”
He added that custard is served slightly warmer, allowing flavors to stand out more immediately.
The Coconut Creek location will feature a counter-service setup with approximately 12 indoor seats, designed for quick visits and grab-and-go convenience. Guests can expect eight daily flavors, including staples like vanilla and chocolate, as well as cakes, pies, and catering options for events and gatherings.
While Abbott’s is known for its classic recipes dating back to 1902, Osorio said local influences will play a role in the menu.
“While we stay true to the classic recipes that made Abbott’s famous, we are definitely looking into flavors that resonate with the South Florida palate,” Osorio said. “Expect to see some tropical influences and bright, refreshing options that pair perfectly with our local climate.”
A rotating “Flavor of the Day” will also be a key part of the experience, featuring both fan favorites and seasonal specialties. Customers will be able to stay updated through the shop’s social media channels, including Instagram and Facebook.
Osorio said bringing Abbott’s to Coconut Creek is about blending tradition with a modern experience.
“Abbott’s has survived and thrived since 1902 because the quality is timeless,” he said. “Bringing that ‘Upstate New York’ nostalgia to a modern, fast-paced market like South Florida is about bridging the gap, offering a classic, high-quality product in a space that feels fresh and contemporary.”
Beyond the product itself, Osorio hopes the shop becomes a staple for local families.
“I’m most excited for that first spoonful,” he said. “There is a specific ‘wow’ moment when someone tries real frozen custard for the first time and realizes how different it is from anything else. I want our shop to be a place where families make memories, much like people have been doing at Abbott’s for over 120 years.”
Following a brief soft opening period, the business plans to host a grand opening event featuring giveaways and special promotions.
“We will be announcing giveaways and special promotions via our social media channels, so keep an eye out for those details soon,” Osorio said.
While the focus remains on launching the Coconut Creek location, Osorio hinted at future expansion in Broward County.
“Our current focus is 100% on making our Coconut Creek location the best it can be,” he told Coconut Creek Talk. “However, we see a lot of potential in Broward County and would love to bring the Abbotts’ experience to more neighbors in the future.”
For now, Osorio has a simple message for the community:
“We can’t wait to meet you all,” he said. “Whether you’re a long-time fan of Abbott’s from up north or you’ve never heard of frozen custard, we invite you to come by this June and find your new favorite treat.”
