Baseball is officially back, and not only did Anthony Rizzo make his season debut with the New York Yankees, the former Marjory Stoneman Douglas star homered in his first at-bat of the year.
On Friday, Rizzo hit one off of Nathan Eovaldi to cut the Red Sox lead to 3-2 before the Yankees went on to win 6-5 in extra innings. While rounding the bases, Rizzo pointed out to the right-field bleachers to recognize those fans at the game supporting the Anthony Rizzo Foundation.
This year, with the help of the New York Yankees, the Anthony Rizzo Family Foundation provides supporters discounted tickets, and a portion of every ticket purchased goes back to support the foundation.
Fans can enter into the Rizzo home run challenge.
Rizzo signed a two-year deal worth $32 million with an opt-out after year one. A 2007 graduate of Marjory Stoneman Douglas, Rizzo was drafted by the Boston Red Sox that same year. In 2010, he was traded to the San Diego Padres in a deal for All-Star first basemen Adrian Gonzalez.
The powerful hitting lefty hit his 250th career home run in his first season with the Yankees and was a major part of the Chicago Cubs breaking their 108 World Series drought in 2016.
