Academic success has come to Coconut Creek. Atlantic Technical College and Technical High School students not only earned an A in the state’s school grades, but they also achieved the highest score among all Broward County high schools.
The students achieved top results in ten categories, including college and career readiness, mathematics achievement, science, U.S. history, and other areas. There are about 600 high school students in the program.
“We are very proud of our students. Many have been doing very well academically, and they have worked hard,” said assistant director Vicky LaPorte.
The students at Atlantic are very high-achieving, so they did not improve from a low level of performance to a higher level. During the morning, the students take demanding high school courses, and in the afternoon, they study technical subjects in areas such as healthcare and computer science. They can also take college-level courses.
Most of the students love to be challenged. “We have our students read novels in many of our classes,” said Cathy Castelli, department head for Social Studies and English. “We want them to develop critical thinking skills.”
High-level mathematics and science programs are available. “I want students to gain hands-on knowledge of science,” said John Cicos, department head for mathematics and science.
Next year, Atlantic will offer more high-level advanced placement classes. Students who complete the high-level academic courses and pass the examinations will earn Full Bright Futures scholarships, according to LaPorte.
