Jamarcus Ballard {BSO}
A Coconut Creek man was arrested after police say he shot a family member in the abdomen during a domestic dispute.
According to a Coconut Creek Police Department report, officers were called to the residence near the 4800 block of Northwest 19th Street on January 23 after reports of a domestic-related shooting. Police learned that the home was occupied by a couple and their two adult sons, one of whom, later identified as Jamarcus Ballard, 37, was found to be in possession of a firearm.
During a physical altercation between the brothers, the father attempted to intervene by stepping between them. Moments later, he heard what he described as a “pop” and realized one of his sons had been shot.
The victim was transported to North Broward Medical Center with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound just below the waistline. When interviewed by detectives, the victim confirmed he had been involved in a physical altercation with Ballard and identified him as the shooter. The victim told police he believed the shooting was accidental.
Investigators said Ballard, an assistant coach at Northeast High School, was taken to a police interview room, where he admitted to firing one round from his gun, claiming he acted in self-defense. The firearm was recovered at the scene and collected as evidence.
Following the investigation, detectives determined Jamarcus intentionally and knowingly fired his weapon. He was arrested and charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, domestic-related.
Jail records show he is being held at the Broward County Main Jail without bond pending a first appearance before a judge.
