Coconut Creek police used a drone to locate a suspect in a stolen U-Haul truck investigation on Oct. 1, marking the first time the department used a drone to help make an arrest.
Officers responded to the Club Caribe apartment complex at 11:39 a.m. after neighbors reported three young people sleeping in a U-Haul truck in the parking lot, according to the Coconut Creek Police Department. Investigators determined the truck had been stolen.
Police arrested Malakai Sturrup, 18, of Margate, and a 17-year-old girl. A 17-year-old boy hid from officers until an officer used a drone to locate him, police said. He surrendered without incident.
Sturrup and the boy were charged with stealing the truck. The girl was charged with trespassing.
Police took Sturrup to the Broward County Jail. Authorities took the two juveniles to the Juvenile Assessment Center.
