Police are urging residents to be cautious after a local woman was tricked into handing cash to a scammer posing as a bank representative.
According to the Coconut Creek Police Department, the victim received a phone call from someone claiming to be from her bank’s fraud department. The caller told her that her account had been “compromised” and instructed her to withdraw money for safekeeping. The victim was then directed to meet a so-called “bank representative” on Lyons Road, where a courier collected the money in person.
“Most scams we see involve criminals using cash apps or prepaid debit cards to steal money,” police said in a statement. “In this case, the fraudsters actually sent someone to meet the victim and pick up the cash directly.”
Authorities acknowledged that residents may wonder how someone could fall for such a scheme, but stressed that these tactics are effective enough for scammers to keep using them.
“The bottom line is your bank will never call you and ask you to withdraw cash or meet someone to hand over money,” police stated. “If you get a call like this, ignore it, hang up, and never give your money or bank card to anyone claiming to represent your bank.”
Police encouraged residents to share the warning with family members, especially seniors, who are often targeted by such scams.
