Drivers Will Soon See Relief with Adjusted Traffic Signal Timing

Drivers in Parkland and in the northern part of Coral Springs will begin seeing relief each morning when approaching the Sawgrass Expressway southbound on Coral Ridge Drive.

When school began on Monday, traffic was tied up for over a mile north of the Sawgrass which led to a resident asking Broward County Commissioner Michael Udine what could be done about the seemingly short light.

Udine knew that with school starting, this was important because of the amount of traffic around that intersection with residents either trying to get to work or to the various schools in the area. He contacted Scott Brunner, Director with the Broward County Traffic Engineering Division who told him that the signal timing was caused by an 85 second increase in the westbound Sawgrass ramp green time. This was due to a request from the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) to increase the green duration due to help mitigate construction related lane closures on the Sawgrass Expressway.

This worked well, and didn’t seem to create an issue while school was out of session. However, with school back open they realized that this special function was causing additional delay to Coral Ridge Drive traffic since the green time in that area had been correspondingly reduced.

He told Udine that engineers remotely backed down the special function to better balance the timing which will take effect on Wednesday morning.
