As a child, many young athletes receive guidance from their fathers on the baseball field. For Coconut Creek native Jason Vasquez, this relationship has continued into high school, where his father, Tom, coaches him.
Their unique bond has made history for Cardinal Gibbons High School, which won its first State Championship in 37 years.
“To win a state championship with my dad on the team was something very special to me and something I will always cherish,” Jason said. “He taught me everything I know today, and I wouldn’t be where I am today without him. He’s the reason I am the man I am today and is the reason I am at Gibbons. It’s just a very special moment for me and my family.”
Jason was a huge contributor to the Chiefs this year, finishing with a .301 batting average. He had five extra-base hits and drove in 23 runs to help his team to a 25-4-2 record.
Tom had always coached his son and was fortunate enough to lead the Coconut Creek Major Divional All-Stars. His team won Districts and Regionals and participated in the State Finals.

In 2019, Tom was hired as the junior varsity and assistant varsity coach before Jason started attending Cardinal Gibbons High School in 2021. Tom says coaching his son wasn’t always easy, but he wouldn’t change it for the world.
“I had front row seats watching him grow up into this exceptional young man and ball player., Jason said. “Watching him celebrate the state title with his teammates is right up there with one of my fondest memories.”
Jason is hoping to continue his baseball career in college. He already has offers and hopes to make a decision soon.
