A pair of former North Broward Prep baseball stars made headlines this summer, with one representing Team USA and the other announcing a major college commitment.
Ryan McPherson, a 2024 graduate and three-time State Champion with North Broward Prep, was selected to the United States Collegiate National Team. One of just 56 top draft-eligible players invited, McPherson earned his spot after a competitive five-day training camp.
The hard-throwing right-hander made three relief appearances for Team USA, tossing three shutout innings. He did not allow a hit and surrendered only one baserunner—an impressive performance on the national stage.
During his senior year at North Broward Prep, McPherson posted an 11-0 record with a 2.48 ERA. In college, he continued to excel with a 4-1 record across multiple appearances, including two starts. He also recorded 56 strikeouts and saved 56 games in just 39.1 innings of work.
Meanwhile, fellow 2024 graduate Gian De Castro announced his transfer to Long Beach State after spending his freshman year at Arizona State University.
“It feels great to commit to Long Beach State,” De Castro said. “I have confidence in our coaching staff and the entire community. It’s the right time to be at this place.”
Although he didn’t see game action at ASU, De Castro was originally planning to return to Florida before a conversation with Long Beach State Head Coach TJ Bruce changed his trajectory.
“I felt like I was going to be developed and made a better player but, more importantly, be put in a spot to help send a program back to Omaha,” he added.
De Castro had an impressive high school career, helping North Broward Prep to three State titles and a runner-up finish. He hit .332 with five home runs and 60 RBIs over four seasons. Since graduating, he says his biggest growth has been in the mental side of the game, and physically, he’s stronger and ready to contribute. Long Beach State finished last season with 22 wins, and De Castro is eager to make an immediate impact.
