Homeowners Gain New Protection From Unwanted Door-to-Door Solicitation

That knock on the door from a salesperson could prove costly. A new Florida law gives homeowners the power to keep commercial solicitors off their property by displaying a specific warning sign backed by financial penalties and criminal consequences.

The new state law, which took effect July 1, 2026, gives homeowners the authority to prohibit commercial solicitation at their residences by posting a specific “No Commercial Solicitation” sign.

Under Section 501.062 of the Florida Statutes, commercial solicitors are prohibited from approaching homes that display a compliant sign notifying visitors that commercial solicitation is not permitted.

Violators face a $500 noncriminal fine for a first offense. A second or subsequent violation can result in a second-degree misdemeanor.

To qualify for the law’s protections, homeowners must post a sign that meets several requirements.

The sign must measure at least 8.5 inches by 11 inches, be clearly visible to anyone approaching the residence, and include the following language, or substantially similar wording, in letters that are at least 1 inch tall:

“THIS DWELLING IS DESIGNATED PRIVATE PROPERTY. NO COMMERCIAL SOLICITATION IS PERMITTED PURSUANT TO SECTION 501.062, FLORIDA STATUTES.”

The law applies to commercial solicitation, meaning door-to-door attempts to sell goods or services. Homeowners who display the required sign can report violations to law enforcement if solicitors ignore the notice.

The law does not prohibit all door-to-door activity. Political canvassing, religious outreach and other forms of protected speech are generally governed by separate legal standards and are not covered by the commercial solicitation restrictions.

Homeowners interested in taking advantage of the new protections should ensure their signs comply with the law’s size, visibility and wording requirements.
