Shamar Nicardo Lewis {BSO}
A man is facing multiple felony charges after police say he tried to purchase an ATV using counterfeit $100 bills, with $70,000 worth found in his possession.
According to the Coconut Creek Police Department police report, Shamar Nicardo Lewis, 26, of Riviera Beach, was taken into custody on July 1 following an incident that began when officers observed his suspicious behavior near a construction site in the 7400 block of Northwest 39th Avenue.
According to the report, officers observed Lewis in his parked vehicle in the area for over 30 minutes – a location that had recently experienced a pattern of vehicle burglaries.
Upon approaching the vehicle, officers reported a strong odor of burnt marijuana coming from inside and noted that both Lewis and his passenger appeared “nervous, agitated, and belligerent.”
Despite repeated verbal commands to exit the vehicle, Lewis allegedly refused and attempted to close the door on the officer. Police say he resisted being handcuffed by twisting his arms but was eventually detained after a physical struggle.
Records show a search of the vehicle uncovered a large package of suspected marijuana and approximately $70,000 in counterfeit U.S. currency, mostly in $100 bills.
Further investigation later revealed that Lewis had contacted a Craigslist seller in an attempt to purchase an ATV for $7,800, presumably in the fake currency he had in the vehicle.
Additionally, police say Lewis had a loaded handgun concealed in his waistband at the time of his arrest.
Lewis was arrested and transported to the Broward County Main Jail.
