The Mayor’s Cup featured a battle between two teams from Coconut Creek, with Monarch High School pulling out a 29-26 win on Friday night.
The Knights, who have won the last three District Titles, began the game slowly, falling behind by double digits, but Florentino Lopez ran for the first touchdown of the game. Jabari Brady went on to haul in a touchdown pass as well, while Jeremy Milcent tossed a pair of touchdown passes to Keeshawn Paschall.
The Knights went 7-4 last year and are set to begin the regular season with a matchup against Bolles High School on Friday, August 21, at 8:00 p.m. The Bulldogs enter the season as the 14th-ranked team in Florida, having gone 10-2 a year ago.
The Knights will then play games against Deerfield Beach, Don Bosco Prep, Seminole, Fort Lauderdale, Chaminade Madonna, Coral Springs High School, St. Thomas Aquinas, Piper, and Blanche Ely.
The Cougars went 4-6 last year but managed to still reach the playoffs before losing to Blanche Ely High School. They had wins against Boyd H Anderson, Deerfield Beach, Miramar, and Marjory Stoneman Douglas.
Coconut Creek will play their first regular-season game on Friday, August 22, at 7 p.m. against Miramar High School. The Patriots went 7-5 last year but lost 7-0 in their matchup with the Cougars. Coconut Creek will then play games against Piper, Western, Deerfield Beach, Cardinal Gibbons, Boyd H Anderson, Atlantic, Blanche Ely, and Marjory Stoneman Douglas.
