In honor of her friend and Kristin Jacobs, State Representative Christine Hunschofsky D-Parkland, presented her first bill in the Florida House, renaming the Southeast Florida Coral Reef Ecosystem in Jacob’s name.
“Kristin was a fierce environmentalist who worked hard to get things done, as well as an incredible advocate for our city,” said the former Parkland Mayor, who presented HB 217: Conservation Area Designations to the Environment, Agriculture & Flooding Subcommittee on Tuesday.
Jacobs was a nationally-recognized champion and tireless advocate for protecting Florida’s environmental assets, who lost her cancer battle in 2020. A former county commissioner, two-time mayor of Broward County, state representative for District 96, was a longtime friend and inspiration of Representative Hunschofsky.
The Southeast Florida Coral Reef Ecosystem Conservation Area was established in 2018 and includes the sovereign submerged lands and state waters offshore of Martin, Palm Beach, Broward, and Miami-Dade Counties from the northern boundary of the Biscayne National Park to the St. Lucie Inlet.
“I am pleased to say that it passed through the committee with unanimous support and now moves on to the Agriculture Appropriations Subcommittee,” Hunschofsky said.
Rep. Christine Hunschofsky represents District 96, which includes Coconut Creek, Parkland, a majority of Margate, and the north and east area of Coral Springs.
