Parkland Parks and Recreation is gearing up for an event that offers fun for the whole family.
The city’s Clues in the Park summer-themed scavenger hunt will begin on Monday, July 18, at 5 p.m., when participants will look for the location of a lost key and treasure chest.
At that time, the city’s communications department will release the first clue on Parkland’s website.
That clue will lead participants to three more clues that the city will release about the key’s location.
Once participants solve each clue that leads them to the last, they can email the location of the found key and treasure box to cluesinthepark@cityofparkland.org.
The city will enter all residents who solve the scavenger hunt into a raffle for a chance to win a prize. Harrison stated the city has not determined what the award will be. The drawing will be on July 25.
According to Scott Harrison, assistant director of parks and recreation, Clues in the Park began during the pandemic when the city started looking for ways to socialize safely.
“During COVID, it was important to get people out of the house and keep families together,” he said.
Harrison said that the city decided to implement the program after looking through social media at what other communities were doing.
Besides bringing friends and families together, Harrison said that Clues in the Park offers long-time and new residents a new way to get to know the city and its parks.
“We wanted to utilize all of the parks throughout parkland and direct people to different amenities at the different parks,” he said.
Harrison estimates that the city usually gets about 30 submission emails back each time that the city holds the event.
He stated that the city aims to hold the event four times yearly, with each scavenger hunt having a different theme.
In 2021, Parkland hosted an additional summer-themed event and another where participants had to uncover who stole the cookies from the cookie jar.
