Coconut Creek Welcomes New Mayor and Vice Mayor, Unveils City Manager’s Payment Package

Newly named Coconut Creek Mayor Sandra Welch and Vice Mayor Jackie Railey.

The Coconut Creek City Commission has appointed a new mayor and vice mayor and established a payment package for the newly named city manager.

At the meeting held on March 28, the commission made a few decisions. Commissioner Sandra Welch was appointed as the new mayor, replacing Josh Rydell, who was honored and returned to his role as a commissioner. Commissioner Jackie Railey was appointed as the new vice mayor.

“The ceremonial positions of mayor and vice mayor are held for a duration of one year.”

Mayor Welch holds several positions. She is the vice chair of the Water Advisory Board and a member of the Climate Change Task Force at the Broward County level. She also represents Coconut Creek at the Broward County Metropolitan Planning Organization. According to city information, she serves on the School Advisory Council.

Vice Mayor Railey was honored. “I am excited about becoming vice mayor. I want to be more involved and work on more projects. We may have differences of opinion, but we always want to do right for the residents,” she said.

Railey has a record of community service. She has served as the Chairperson of the Coconut Creek Community Outreach Advisory Board and the Coconut Creek Restricting Committee and has been involved with other community organizations. According to city information, she has had a successful career in real estate and property management.

The commission agreed to an employment agreement with City Manager Sheila Rose, who was appointed on March 14 after serving as deputy city manager. The three-year agreement has a starting salary of $285,418 and benefits. Members of the Commission gave her a standing ovation.

Rose told the commission she was humbled to be offered this position and that she considered Coconut Creek a special place. “I have been here for over 25 years. I commit to taking your vision forward to be open, to be inclusive, to listen to what you have to say, and I hope to bring the team forward to achieve your goals,”
