Interim Police Chief Fred Hofer {David Volz}
Fred Hofer is the Coconut Creek Interim Police Chief.
During the May 9 meeting, City Manager Sheila Rose appointed Fred Hofer as interim police chief. He had been serving as deputy chief.
He replaces Albert Arenal, who announced his retirement effective June 20, 2024.
Hofer said he was pleased to be selected for this position and wants to continue serving the community. He also wants to be considered for the permanent police chief position.
According to Rose, Hofer has extensive experience as a police department leader and will provide exemplary leadership while the search for a permanent chief takes place.
Hofer began serving Coconut Creek in 1997 in the public safety department as a firefighter/EMT. He also completed the police academy. A few years later, when the police and fire department split, he went to law enforcement.
Hofer served on the SWAT team for about 20 years. He held various positions, including sniper, team leader, and executive officer. He has worked as a field training officer, bicycle officer, and detective on the Special Enforcement Team (SET).
After achieving the rank of sergeant, he supervised the SET, the K9 team, and the training unit. Hofer earned promotions to lieutenant and then captain and served as operations division commander, where he was in charge of the department’s patrol and criminal investigations sections, according to Scotty Leamon, public information officer.
According to Leamon, Hofer holds a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice management from Union Institute and University in Hollywood and is a graduate of the Southern Police Institute’s Command Office Development School.
