High School Sports Thrive as Monarch and Coconut Creek Excel in Cheerleading, Soccer, Wrestling, and Basketball

With the winter season’s end approaching, Monarch and Coconut Creek had exciting weeks with the Regional Championship and Senior Nights.

The Monarch cheerleading team finished second in their medium co-ed division after a great run at Districts and advanced straight to the State Finals in Gainesville on February 2-3. The Knights honored their seniors earlier this year with the BCAA All-Academic Award and Most Valuable Cheerleader Kaylee Hamilton, Samantha Ponevac, Nick Dematteo, Ali Savio, and Hannah Frelich.

Coconut Creek also competed, and while they did not advance, they finished in 10th place in the Medium Non-Tumbling Division.

Monarch had the boys team beat J.P. Taravella 2-0 on Senior Night on January 12 in soccer. They honored Jaden Chin, Luka McCluskey, Atilla Kovacs, Jose Comella, Rusdy Augusto, Jack Steinbeuckner, Aaron Lagombra, and Victor Ramos, while Jimenez and McClsukey scored goals.Jimenez also made four saves in the net, with Ramos saving two in the shutout win.

“The seniors have been the backbone of the team and they have helped the younger players grow and understand what it’s like to play high school soccer,” head coach Eric Swickle said.

The Knights then went 1-1-1 in their three games this week, highlife by a 3-2 win over Blanche Sly High School for the ninth victory of the season. Monarch tied 1-1 against Coral Glades and lost 2-0 against Doral Academy before the start of the District Tournament.

The girls soccer team completed their regular season with a 4-1 win over Blanche Ely High School. Their seniors are Rachel King and Isabella Gongora, who helped lead the Knights to a record of 5-11.

Kaitlin Deal scored two goals, with King and Esther Seide scoring one. Lisette Bernundez allowed one goal and made three saves. Monarch lost 7-1 against Coral Glades earlier in the week, with Sarria scoring on an assist from Gongora.

The Coconut Creek boys soccer team finished the regular season with a record of 8-5-2 and honored Mario Walter, Schwenley Joseph, Wickenson Alexandre, and Denex Cheri.

The Cougars beat Hallandale 2-0 with goals from Clevice Joseph and Jovens Alexis. Joseph also had an assist along with one from Alexandre. Cehnari Brown and Dorian Petilien scored goals against McArthur High School.

Girls soccer had a rough season and finished at 0-10-2. They lost 5-0 against Hallandale and then 4-1 versus Plantation High School.

Monarch’s wrestling team had two girls place in a tournament in Immokalee, with Payton Moier finishing in first place. Abigail Moyer came in second, while Rosie Kleine was in a bracket with five state champions and went 1-2. The boys team is set to have a tri-meet on Wednesday, January 24, against McArthur and Fort Lauderdale High School.

In basketball, the Monarch High School boys’ and girls’ teams have combined for seven wins, with six coming from the boys. Both teams lost to Northeast and Coral Springs High School this week and will take on Olympic Heights High School in their next game on January 29, with the girls starting at 4 p.m. and the boys tipping off at 6 p.m.

The Coconut Creek boys basketball team is 2-13 this year and lost 74-51 in their last game, while the girls responded to a loss against McArthur High School with a 66-15 win over Everglades High School on Friday to move to 8-7. They will play their next game on Monday, January 22, against Coral Springs Charter at 6 p.m., with the boys to follow.
