Parkland Buddy Sports is getting ready for their next season of basketball.

“The tremendous response we have received from both players and volunteers so far is a clear indication that our community values and supports inclusion,” said Bob Mayersohn, Parkland Buddy Sports President and Vice Mayor.

The nationally recognized nonprofit organization has provided peer-to-peer sports programming for children and young adults with special needs since 2002.

Teams will learn basketball fundamentals in an informal, low-pressure environment, in addition to having warm-up instruction and one-on-one time with a buddy.

Parkland Buddy Sports programs and events for children start at age 4, and volunteering opportunities are available on Sundays, beginning at 11 a.m. Most Buddy volunteers are high school students, but the program also allows elementary, middle school students and adults.

“We have some great volunteers,” said Mayersohn. “And through engagement, education, and empowerment, they realize they can make a difference in somebody’s life.”

The season runs from January 9 through the end of February, with games on Sunday at 11:45 a.m. at Terramar Park.
