Fall sports season continues, with Coconut Creek and Monarch High School competing on senior nights.
Football
The Coconut Creek High School football team’s magical season continued on Friday with their West Boca Raton Community High School on senior night.
The Cougars honored Gerald Magnus, Elijah Cannon, Jamari Hostclaw, James Hayes, Damaine Wilson, Eirik Simmons, Travis Thompson, Martin Montero, Raymond Jackson, Semaj Wallace, James Douse, Jackson Norkunas, Christoper Allen, Javares Jones, Andre Poiter-Abreu, Djovamy Dominique, Hayjah Miller, Keyvonate Williams, Keon Hostclaw, Rohmel Grossman, Joshua Smith, Jayden Anglin, Isaiah Hope, Keon Daceus, Kael Daceus and Godson Sinelin.
Coconut Creek, who came in as the 15th-ranked team in Florida, allowed a touchdown on the first play and fell behind 12-0. However, they responded with 14 unanswered points to end the half. The Cougars then scored on their first possession in the second half and added three more touchdowns to move to 6-2. Hayes finished the game with three touchdown passes and over 100 yards on the ground.
Next, the Cougars will play on Thursday, October 20, against McArthur High School. The Mustangs are 3-2-1 this year but lost 41-13 against Coconut Creek in 2022.
The varsity team for Monarch High School had a bye, and they will be in action against St. Thomas Aquinas High School on Friday, October 20, at 7 p.m. The Raiders come in as the 12th-ranked team in the county and have a record of 6-1. The Junior varsity team fell 16-14 in their game against Boyh H. Anderson.
Volleyball
Monarch recorded a win over their rival Coconut Creek High School on Tuesday in girls volleyball. The Knights won 25-16, 25-10, 25-18, and also had the chance to recognize Jordan Campbell, Julianna Oliveira, Rachel Laine, Joyce Dusek, and Veronica Perez on October 10. Monarch then qualified for the Big Eight Championships, featuring the top eight teams in Broward County, but fell in the opening round 25-11, 25-15 against Cardinal Gibbons.
They are set to play Coral Springs High School in the opening round of the District Championship. The Knights are 12-6 this year and will take on the Colts on Monday, October 16, at 5 p.m. CSHS is the sixth seed and has five wins this year.
The Cougars held their senior night on Wednesday in their match against Plantation High School. They recorded a 25-13, 25-15, and 24-19 win and honored Jadha Sunderland, Juliana Santiago, Rosa Cuellar, Newman Robinson, and Najee Padin. The Cougars closed the regular season with a 25-10, 25-4, 25-10 victory over Blanche Ely High School to move to 9-4 heading into the postseason.
They are set to play Deerfield Beach High School in the opening round of the District Tournament. The Bucks come in as the lower seed after winning eight matches this year.
Cross Country
Asia Gilbert was the lone runner for Coconut Creek and finished 32nd at 28:23.3, while Isabela Rodriguez and Isabella Alba placed 37th and 52nd, respectively, for Monarch. They will not get set for the postseason, with the BCAA Championship set for Thursday, October 19, at Markham Park.
