A new club at Westglades Middle School needs tennis supplies and is looking to the community for help.
Seventh and eighth-grade art teacher Debra Golding, who has taught at Westglades since 2006, formed the tennis club this year.
“We’ve never had tennis at Westglades, so I decided to start something where kids can play together just for fun,” said Golding, adding that it falls in line with the other social-emotional learning activities to help relieve stress.
Golding, whose daughter, Jolie, is in sixth grade, came up with the idea from their shared interest in the sport. She is coaching the club, which is open to all grades, and meets once a week for an hour.
Since she started from scratch and didn’t want to charge high dues, Golding decided to launch a DonorsChoose project to purchase a tennis ball machine and two hoppers for the club, totaling around $1,200.
“Having a mini tennis ball machine would be great, so when I’m teaching some of the kids, the others can use it on another court,” she said.
For Golding’s art classes, she has had luck with multiple projects in the past, including the purchase of a 3D printer and a heat press for use with silk screening,
Westglades parents have been amazing supporters of the arts, “I’ve been very lucky, and I’m thankful for the community I work in.”
