Democratic presidential candidate Mike Bloomberg is no stranger to Parkland.
In 2018, Bloomberg Philanthropies, the charitable foundation led by the former New York City mayor, donated $1 million to Parkland and Coral Springs for a public art project titled “Inspiring Community After Gun Violence: The Power of Art.”
Later that year, he met with families impacted by the Marjory Stoneman Douglas shooting and hosted a gun safety rally, through his Everytown for Gun Safety organization, at the Coral Springs Museum of Art.
On Saturday, February 22, at 12:00 pm – 1:30 pm Bloomberg will open his official presidential campaign office in Parkland, located at 7363 N. State Road 7.
Gun safety is a top issue for the Bloomberg campaign, and this resonates strongly with Parkland voters.
“Parkland is a community that will be forever devastated by the effects of a mass shooting,” explained Theresa Garner, Bloomberg’s Florida Press Secretary. “Our campaign is setting up an office there to do outreach for all families, and to show those who are fighting every day for gun reform that Mike is committed to making that change happen.”
U.S. Congressman Ted Deutch, whose district includes Parkland, announced last week that he would also endorse Bloomberg in the election, based, in part, on their shared stance on gun safety issues.
Sari Kaufman, a senior at Marjory Stoneman Douglas and staunch Bloomberg supporter, plans to attend the campaign office opening on Saturday.
The student activist has spent the last two years volunteering for Everytown for Gun Safety, and she is also featured in Bloomberg’s latest digital commercial on gun violence.
“I am helping register students to vote and organizing volunteers for canvassing and hosting debate watch parties,” she said.
“I also recently joined the Bloomberg campaign on the gun violence prevention tour in Orlando. I think he has the best platform on gun reform.”
And, while Kaufman is not yet old enough to cast a ballot in the upcoming primaries on March 17, she looks forward to turning eighteen before the general election this November.
