On Tuesday, Sheriff Gregory Tony took the oath of office to continue serving Broward County residents.
Sheriff Tony was appointed by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis on January 11, 2019, after he suspended former Broward Sheriff Scott Israel after the mass shootings at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport and Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.
In a very tight primary race, Broward Sheriff Gregory Tony won against Scott Israel, then again in November against H. Wayne Clark with over 65 percent of the vote.
In a statement, Sheriff Tony said, “Two years ago when I assumed command of BSO, I did so with the promise of putting public safety before all else. In just a short time, we’ve made significant progress in achieving our goals. Better training, better equipment, and the introduction of new technologies mean Broward County is safer today.”
