Coconut Creek High School had a pair of football players officially announce their college commitments, with Isaiah Calixte and Javion Francis set to continue their careers at the next level.
Calixte has committed to Jacksonville State University after playing on the varsity team since his freshman year.
“It feels great to commit,” Calixte said. “Not everyone gets this opportunity to be in this position, so I’m blessed to be committed to Jax State.”
Football has been a major part of Calixte’s life since he began playing at four years old. He competed in youth football for the North Miami Beach Sun Devils, South Miami Grey Ghosts, Fort Lauderdale Hurricanes, Pompano Cowboys, Fort Lauderdale Falcons and Lauderhill Broncos.
Calixte said his decision to commit to Jacksonville State came down to the coaching staff, team culture, development opportunities and family atmosphere.
“I felt like they can develop me on and off the field,” Calixte said. “I also love how they develop their DBs. I felt like Jax State was the best place for me to grow, compete and reach my goals.”
He opened the season with a strong performance against Plantation High School, recording five pass breakups and two tackles in Coconut Creek’s 48-0 victory.
Calixte also contributed on offense last season, catching nine passes for 124 yards and two touchdowns. During his time with the Cougars, Coconut Creek won 10 games during his freshman season. After winning four games the following year, the Cougars bounced back to go 9-3 last season and capture a district championship.
Francis is committed to the University of West Georgia and says the opportunity brings a mix of pride, excitement, relief and nervousness.
“It’s a moment where I realize all my hard work and sacrifices have paid off, while knowing I am about to start a whole new chapter and compete at the next level,” Francis said.
Francis said his decision to commit to West Georgia came down to finding the right fit both on and off the field.
“I considered the coaching staff, team culture, academics, opportunities to develop and where I felt most comfortable,” Francis added. “I chose the school where I felt I could grow as a player and as a person. The coaches created a strong bond with me, and West Georgia has a great football program.”
Like Calixte, Francis began playing football at four years old. He competed in youth football for the Lauderhill Lions, Lauderdale Lakes and Miami Gardens Chiefs before eventually reaching the varsity level at Coconut Creek.
Francis made an immediate impact in the Cougars’ season opener against Plantation, catching four passes for 52 yards and a touchdown in the victory.
He is coming off a season in which he recorded 10 receptions for 106 yards and will look to build on those numbers during his final year with Coconut Creek before continuing his career at West Georgia.
Before heading to the college level, both players will be back in action on Friday, August 28, at 7:30 p.m. The matchup will also mark the opening of the new field at Coconut Creek High School, with the Cougars set to face True North Classical Academy as part of the Broward County Showcase.
