Two baseball players made announcements for North Broward Prep baseball, and their football team also began the season in the kickoff Classic.
Yoel Tejada Jr. officially signed with the Washington Nationals after being picked in the 14th round by the Washington Nationals.
He shined at North Broward Prep, going 15-0 on the mound and hitting .355 as a senior with four home runs and 30 RBIs. He went on to play his first year at the University of Florida despite getting drafted in the 19th round by the Pittsburgh Pirates.
As a freshman, Tejada went 2-0 and pitched to an ERA of 5.56 in eight games. He then transferred to Florida State University, where he pitched in 13 games, striking out 15 in 19.2 innings.
Senior Max Burkholz committed to Bryant University.
“Thank you to my family, friends, teammates, and coaches for helping me get to this point,” Burkholz said. “Thank you, Coach Klosterman and Coach Kaufman, for this opportunity to play Division 1 baseball! Proud to be a Bulldog.”
Burkholz has played on the varsity baseball for two years and was a key piece last season, helping the Eagles win the third title in four years. Burkholz hit .365 with 13 RBIs and 23 runs scored. He has also pitched in six games and was 2-0 with an era of 2.00.
In college, Burkholz will attend a school that reached the NCAA Tournament a season ago. The team won 36 games, including the American East Championship to launch its ticket to the tournament.
In football, North Broward Prep began the season with a 35-0 win in the Kickoff Classic against J.P. Taravella on Thursday. The Eagles went 5-6 last year and will play their next game on Friday, August 23, against Somerset Academy at 7 p.m. NBP won 46-13 in their only meeting last year.
