On Thursday night, Bar Louie at the Promenade in Coconut Creek was packed with community members who came together for a “Tip A Hero” event to raise money for K-9 training.
The fundraiser was held to support The United States Police Canine Association (USPCA), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to providing K-9 teams with the resources they need to perform their duties to the best of their ability.
The evening was filled with activities, including a K-9 demonstration, a DJ, and items for sale. The Coconut Creek K-9 Unit and other officers and firefighters served as “celebrity servers” for the night, with a portion of each tab going directly to the USPCA.
Throughout the night, guests had the opportunity to meet the officers and their canine companions and learn more about the work that the USPCA does.
Mayor Joshua Rydell was on hand to express his support for the event, saying, “We are a pro-first responder and pro-law enforcement community, and this is the smallest thing a city can do; your city officials can do to support law enforcement and bringing awareness and families and kids, and friends out are exactly what Coconut Creek is all about.”
He also expressed his pride in the Coconut Creek K-9 squad and the upcoming USPCA Region 1 Field Trials, which will take place in the city from March 19-24.
The money raised from the event will support the field trials and training classes for K-9 handlers throughout the week.
Mayor Rydell expressed his excitement for the upcoming competition. “We are used to seeing a lot of canine displays put on by local municipal police departments; it’s a good event. Seeing it in the competitive way that you’re having other agencies from various states around the country compete is something I’ve never seen before that I look forward to seeing. I can’t wait to see Coconut Creek hopefully win it.”
